White Deer Park focuses on the preservation of former farmland, protection of the natural environment and education opportunities. The centerpiece of the 90 acre park is the 2,500 sf Nature Center, positioned to overlook a major wetlands complex. The project employs sustainable design principles in the areas of storm water management, planting design and material choices, as well as the heating, cooling and water systems of the building. Alternative energy sources employed by the project include a geothermal system, solar power and storm water capture. During construction, flooring and ceiling boards, salvaged by the design team from an existing homestead structure, were repurposed in the Nature Center. The project is registered with the USGBC as a LEED Gold project.
In addition to open space preservation and the Nature Center park elements include playgrounds, trails, picnic shelters, restroom facilities and an arboretum. A natural learning playground provides an area for smaller children to connect with nature within a safe play experience.
