Southern Community Park was planned to address current and future recreation needs for the Town of Chapel Hill.  In tandem, the park incorporates public art, addresses storm water quality and strengthens connections to adjacent neighborhoods.  The community’s involvement was extensive throughout the planning and design process.  Concerns raised by adjacent neighborhoods, community leaders, recreation groups and town officials were defined and successfully addressed by park plans.

The park exhibits a balance, preserving the most environmentally significant and sensitive portions of the 80 acre park site while providing multiple active recreation opportunities. Seventy percent of the park land remains undisturbed.

Major elements include three premier soccer / athletic fields, dog park, roller hockey court, basketball courts, open space, hiking trails and the extension of an existing greenway system.  The master plan also accommodates a future community center and town recycling center.

A constructed wetland at the center of the park treats storm water and serves as a visual focus.  In addition, three separate public art installations were integrated into the fabric of the park.
